Description: This is a portrait of a little girl next to a young child standing on a chair. This photograph was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in southeastern Ohio or central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed “Ewing Brothers” and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Albert J. Ewing. A selection of the original glass plate negatives were exhibited for the first time in 2013 at the Ohio Historical Center. View on Ohio Memory.

Henry was the son of Napoleon Jerome Alexander (N.J.A.) Minich. Born October 2, 1849, in Columbia, Pennsylvania, N. J. A. Minich worked for a series of newspapers in Columbia, Pennsylvania, Akron, Ohio, and Kent, Ohio. He founded the Akron Daily Argus and was the editor and proprietor of the Kent Saturday Bulletin. Description: Portrait of Union soldier Alonzo Frazell posing in his Civil War uniform with a pistol. Frazell enlisted on August 4, 1862, at age 27 for a three-year period. He began as a private and later attained the rank of corporal in Company F of the 45th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was killed in battle at Monticello, Kentucky, on June 9, 1863. Description: Ambrotype bust portrait of a young man, John T. Wood, in an eight- plate Moroccan leather case. Wood wears a dark coat, vest and tie. The image has tinted pink cheeks and lips. The case, which is impressed with a medallion of a floral basket spouting water over two birds, has a red cotton velveteen lining. The stamped brass floral preserver surrounds an oval mat with shields in the corners. "Uncle John Wood" is inscribed on a note attached to the back of the case, which is missing its lid. The photograph dates from around 1859. John T. Wood was an officer during the Civil War. He served as an aide to General Francis Channing Barlow. Wood sustained an injury to his arm at Gettysburg when Barlow's division was overrun and Barlow was killed. Wood recovered from his wounds and became a lieutenant colonel in the 180th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
